The 13 areas will trial the Government's Common Assessment Framework, which has been developed for use by all professionals working with children and young people. The framework is part of the Government's Every Child Matters reforms.
The Government wants the framework to become the main method used by agencies to assess young people. If more than one agency is involved, the work would be led by a named "lead professional".
The DfES plans to recruit external evaluators to assess the trials of the new approach, which is to be rolled out to all authorities from April next year.
Training materials for the framework are available on the DfES web site.
