What is it all about? Following on from John Dunford's review of the Office of the Children's Commissioner in 2010, the government is seeking views on how it intends to implement his recommendations. The consultation is not aimed at reopening the debate about the role and purpose of the commissioner but focuses on the changes to legislation needed to make the role more fit for purpose.
What are the main points? The government is proposing the creation of a new Office of the Children's Commissioner for England. The commissioner's role will be to protect the rights of all children in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. There are also plans for the office to incorporate the functions and responsibilities of the children's rights director in Ofsted.
