As human beings we tend to categorise people into restrictive boxes, but I would like to encourage people not to pre-judge others.
I would create a publicity campaign involving adverts, leaflets and television programmes that discuss important equality issues, such as those involving sexuality, race, religion and age. As a member of the Respect? campaign, I am proactively doing something about the stereotyping of young people. It also allows me to meet people from all over the UK and challenge any prejudices I have myself.
If I were in charge of equalities, I would encourage people who do suffer from negative stereotypes to speak up because so often people may not actually know a Muslim person, a gay person or a teenager. By getting these voices heard, we can help to humanise and unify ourselves. I think, too often, people feel that they don't have an impact. But why not? Make your voice heard and you'll be surprised at the results.
