Andrew is a member of the Give and Take project in Belfast and has been attending one-day work placement sessions with local bike shop, Life Cycles, for the past seven months. Give and Take has been giving young people on the edge of exclusion a real chance of a future since it was launched in 1989 by Include Youth, a campaigning and policy organisation for children's rights in Northern Ireland.
Based in cosy, informal offices in central Belfast, with a pool room and a kitchen for young people to use, the project uses a three-pronged approach to get young people engaged and thinking about their future. After a six-week induction and needs assessment, each young person meets with two key workers, one who will arrange work placements for them and another who works on personal development skills through residentials and one-to-one work. The personal development scheme is available to all young people for as long as they need it, including those who are still on the waiting list for a work placement.
