Social work training has been heavily criticised for failing to give students hands-on experience. Nancy Rowntree looks at a scheme that is helping to fill the void.

Twenty-four-year-old Steph Duke was concerned at first when she was given a social work placement at the charity Prince's Trust. "I had expected more work with social workers and with the Prince's Trust being a charity I was a bit miffed," says Duke, who is currently studying for a Masters in social work at the University of Central Lancashire (Uclan). "But as soon as I started I thought it was super and I ended up doing more than others in more restrictive roles. When you start you blunder around acting and hoping you're doing the right thing but I worked with two different teams during the placement and for the second one I was much more confident in my abilities."
