Employers reject pay arbitration call

Youth Work
Employers have rejected calls to settle a dispute over youth work pay levels by arbitration.

Last month, Doug Nicholls, staff-side secretary for the Joint Negotiating Committee for Youth and Community Workers, wrote to the employers' side asking for pay levels to be substantially increased. But in a letter dated 14 October, Allison Wheeler, secretary for the employers' side, rejected the chance for the dispute to go to arbitration. Wheeler said that arbitration can only take place "where both parties are prepared to commit themselves to accepting that the outcome is binding".

She added that the employers' side was not able to give such a commitment "as it would be irresponsible to leave councils and voluntary organisations exposed to potential expenditure that they could not afford".
