The widespread use of digital technology has its advantages but it has also resulted in new types of bullying among young people. Nancy Rowntree looks at ways to tackle cyberbullying.

For years, 17-year-old Opey Akinyele suffered at the hands of bullies. She was subjected to racist comments and other insults, first to her face at school and then through the internet or mobile phones.

"A group of boys would say stuff about my name, because it's odd, or my weight," she recalls. "Then I started getting malicious phone calls where the person would just hang up or texts, like calling me a fat bitch, but I didn't know who they were from. Everyone used to have FreeWeb and I got called a nigger on one of those; it was never racial in school, they wouldn't say that to my face, but they thought they could get away with it online."
