The subject cannot ignore controversy, and pupils need to be aware thatthe impact of religion is ambiguous, the Making Sense of Religion reportsays.
Miriam Rosen, director of education at Ofsted, said: "Recent worldevents, the rise of more fundamentalist forms of religion, the growth offaith schools and the debate about the relationship between religion andBritish identity have given a new impetus and urgency to RE."
The teaching of RE has improved in the past few years, but lessonquality and pupil achievement remain inconsistent, Ofsted found. Thereport calls for a review of the current statutory provision of RE.
RE is outside of the National Curriculum, with each local authorityresponsible for developing its own locally-agreed syllabus.
