EDUCATION: Project helps low achievers get jobs

1 min read

The e-skills4industry programme, led by accountancy firm Deloitte & Touche, put 36 young people from Tower Hamlets, east London, on vocational courses.

Fifteen were taken on by partner companies, eight went on to do more IT training, while the rest took up full-time studying.

Abdin Ahmed, 18, from Tower Hamlets, is now working full time for Deloitte & Touche. He said: "We learned a lot about having people skills."

Candidates were selected after teachers identified them as likely to gain few GCSEs. The pilot was supported by e-skills UK, the sector skills council for the IT industry. It will be extended to 10 locations with 150,000 from the Learning and Skills Council and business sponsors.
