Education: Plans for governing bodies slammed

1 min read Education
The head of the National Governors' Association has criticised government proposals to make school governing bodies smaller.

A working group, chaired by schools minister Jim Knight, has been formed to develop plans to give every school a highly skilled, smaller and better trained governing body. Currently bodies have between nine and 20 members.

But Judith Bennett, chair of the association and a member of the working group, said: "I wonder if this is related to a perceived inability to get governors as 11 per cent of posts in England are vacant. There's also a view that smaller equals better - I don't think that's the case.

"The smaller interim executive boards brought in to turn around failing schools, which often have very experienced people on them, would be very hard to replicate across the country. They are also more practical while governing bodies need to be strategic."
