Although training is currently available, it is not compulsory. Judith Bennett, chair of the NGA, said: "If you want more effective governing bodies, they need to be trained well. Governors have responsibility for an enormous budget and they need information and training to do that job well."
The NGA is due to submit a proposal to government in response to plans outlined in the Children's Plan to reduce the size of governing bodies. Bennett agreed the size should be reduced but will urge the government not to go too far.
"I am concerned a reduction to a very small number would not be efficient," she said. "A governing body cannot be smaller than nine, otherwise we don't think you can carry out all of your required duties."
