MPs criticise school governor training

1 min read Education Leadership
A group of MPs has criticised the quality of school governors and want schools to be forced to offer them training.

In its report, The Role of School Governing Bodies, the House of Commons education select committee is also critical of the high number of vacancies for governor posts and called on the government, schools and employers to do more to encourage recruitment.

Its recommendations include a call on the government to review incentives on offer to employers to release staff for governor duties, and to intervene more when governing bodies are found to be failing.

The committee welcomed Ofsted’s recent increased focus on the quality of governing bodies. They also backed a change in regulations in September last year to allow schools to create smaller, more flexible governing bodies based on particular areas of expertise.

But the report adds: “Too many governors have not received suitable training and we recommend the government require all schools to offer training to new governors.”

MPs also found that too few governing bodies are taking advantage of this rule change to ensure they make the best use of the particular skills of their governors.
