Local authorities are becoming increasingly concerned that plans tomerge the Vulnerable Children Grant with three other grants will leavetheir specialist education services without any funding. It is alsofeared that some specialist teachers could be made redundant as a resultof the new arrangements.
The Vulnerable Children Grant was introduced in 2003 to improve accessto education for vulnerable children. Its target groups include asylumseekers and Gypsy or Traveller children.
Under the new arrangements, announced in December last year, the fund isbeing merged with three other existing grants - and new Every ChildMatters funding - to create a 152m children's services grant,which comes into effect later this year.
