Education News: Teaching Union Conferences - Teachers fear education will lose out

1 min read
Teachers are worried that education will take less priority than social services and health because of proposals in the green paper Every Child Matters.

At the Association of Teachers and Lecturers' annual conference in Bournemouth last week, delegates unanimously passed a resolution expressing concern that education in some local education authorities would take a less prominent position in the total welfare of children.

Rosemary Readman, the association's representative for North Yorkshire and York, said she proposed the motion because of her experiences representing secondary schools on North Yorkshire County Council's young people's scrutiny committee, which promotes joined-up working and has representatives from health and social services.

"I found, at the two meetings I've been able to attend, social services was taking priority and education only covered about 10 per cent of the time," she said.
