Education News: Community learning - Hounslow teachers to lose jobsin cuts

Community teachers in west London who have been integral in getting more parents involved in education are to lose their jobs in a cost-cutting measure.

Parents and teachers in Hounslow staged a protest last week against thedecision to make six teachers redundant from six of the borough'sschools.

The community teachers are involved in running courses for parents andout-of-school activities. One of the schools affected is BeaversCommunity Primary School.

Head teacher Dee Strange said: "The loss of a community teacher to runall the extended school activities we hope to provide will bedevastating."

The council says the cuts are being made in order to save money. "One ofthe proposals for making savings includes reducing the provision ofcommunity teachers in schools," said a spokesman.

The council says the extended schools programme will provide a similarservice.
