The new government wants to slash £670m from the Department for Education's (DfE) budget this year, without affecting frontline services. So first in line for the chop is "wasteful spending", namely quangos.
The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) is being scrapped. Among others, the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) is losing £30m from its budget, the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services (NCSL), £16m, and the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC), £15m.
The Young People's Learning Agency (YPLA), which discharges cash to councils for 16 to 19 education, is to see its budget cut by £20m, which includes getting rid of a £13m development fund and money not allocated this year.
