Under Local Government Association proposals, the school year would be broken up into six terms of roughly equal length. The number of teaching days would remain the same, but a fixed Easter break would be introduced, alongside breaks in February, May, October and December.
The six-week summer holiday would also remain, but teaching union NASUWT claims it could be "eroded" with training days.
"Under the plans, local education authorities could put five days of training right in the middle of the summer holidays. But the six-week break is one of our biggest recruitment draws," said a spokeswoman.
The union is currently threatening strike action over a dispute with Hampshire County Council, which is proposing a shorter summer break alongside a longer October half term and fixed Easter break (News, 31 March-6 April).
