School Year: Union and LGA in accord on terms

The Local Government Association and the teaching union NASUWT have reached agreement on the standard school year (News, 28 April-4 May).

The organisations have agreed key principles on which to base national term and holiday dates from 2005/06.

These include a six-week summer holiday and a two-week spring break in April irrespective of the date of the Easter bank holiday.

Chris Keates, acting general secretary of NASUWT said: "NASUWT is currently in dispute with a number of LEAs over their term date proposals.

"If these LEAs now revert to the model we have agreed with the LGA then disputes will be resolved."
