Education News: Starting school - Gateshead offers to help parentscope

Gateshead parents worried about their children's first day at school are being offered training to help them cope.

The pilot course will give parents a chance to meet the teachers, talkto an educational psychologist and get advice on healthy lunches andfinding a job. Parents will also be told how to spot signs of bullyingand will meet a speech and language therapist.

Maggie Atkinson, director of children's services at Gateshead, said:"Hopefully this will make parents and children feel more confident."

The course is being trialled with parents at four primary schools inGateshead and, if successful, will be offered to mums and dads acrossthe borough. The course will take place at Blaydon Winlaton Children'sCentre, which supports families in the areas covered by the schools.
