Education News: Special needs - Bedfordshire looks to overhaulsystem

Bedfordshire County Council is set to overhaul its special needs education after an independent report criticised its statementing process.

The report, commissioned by council leaders, said: "There have been anumber of parents/carers who at some stage in the process have beenunhappy with the quality of communication, advice or provision made fortheir child."

It added: "Of the files reviewed, the consistency and quality ofstatements varied and did not fully meet guidance set out in the code ofpractice."

Conservative councillor Madeline Russell, the council's leader, said:"This report has addressed the immediate concerns raised about ourstatements for children with special needs. I am now determined to takea thorough look at our whole approach."

Bedfordshire was one of a number of councils asked to examine itsstatementing procedures by the Department for Education and Skills.Those procedures now comply with the department's guidelines.
