Education News: Scotland - Teachers' backing for cash incentive

Scottish teachers have backed an initiative that pays pupils to stay on at school despite figures showing that many children are failing to stick to the conditions of the scheme.

Of the 15,515 pupils who received Educational Maintenance Allowance payments, 23 per cent of those eligible to receive a bonus failed to meet targets for them.

However, Jim Docherty, assistant general secretary of the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association, said: "If the allowances helped young people then they are a good thing."
