EDUCATION NEWS: School Music - Unions welcome 1.5m for scheme

Teaching unions have welcomed extra funding for school music, but have warned that there is still a long way to go before provision is restored to its previous levels.

School standards minister David Miliband announced an extra 1.5m funding for LEA music services, amounting to 10,000 for each local authority.

The money will be used to build on the success of 13 pilot projects, designed to increase access to music for primary pupils.

A spokeswoman for the National Union of Teachers said: "Every penny is helpful. School music provision was very badly damaged by the previous government and it will take time to be rebuilt again."

The National Association of Head Teachers described the announcement as a "step in the right direction".

In its evaluation of the pilot projects, Ofsted said most had produced "high-quality work".
