Education News: School absences - Manchester refutes Bangladesh claims

Manchester City Council has denied widespread press reports that it plans to build a school in Bangladesh to combat long absences among children with relatives in the country.

The city's chief education officer, Mick Waters, said he was in the "earliest stage" of talks with the DfES about potential solutions to the problem, but the issue had not been discussed by the city council.

"There is no proposal to build a school overseas, in Bangladesh or elsewhere," he said. "There is no proposal to spend council money on any provision abroad. Any solution will not be at a cost to the council-tax payers or education resources of Manchester."

The leader of the council, councillor Richard Leese, said it was "highly unlikely" that such a project would happen. There was "certainly no provision for it within the council's budget", he added.
