Research commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills alsofound that only 17 per cent of primary head teachers and 30 per cent ofsecondary heads were always able to fund activities for pupils eligiblefor free school meals. However, in spite of difficulties, the majorityof head teachers said they provided some form of extra support, such asproviding alternative activities.
These findings were published alongside the Government's manifesto onout-of-school learning, which offers a safety and support package toenable teachers to take children on more excursions (Children Now, 29November-5 December).
The research, Education Outside the Classroom: An Assessment of Activityand Practice in Schools and Local Authorities, also found littleevidence that the number of trips had declined.
