Education News: Northern Ireland - Funding may take account of poverty

Schools in Northern Ireland with large numbers of disadvantaged pupils could receive more funding if new proposals are approved.

A consultation launched last week by education minister Barry Gardiner suggests making more schools eligible for targeted social need funding by changing the funding formulae to include education indicators alongside free school meal entitlement figures.

Gardiner said the proposals were important because education played a crucial role in breaking the cycle of social deprivation, low educational achievement and unemployment.

The plans are in line with the recent warning from The Education Network, which said education funding in England must target deprived areas more if persistent underachievement is to be tackled (Children Now, 1-7 September).

The deadline for responses to the consultation is 5 November.
