Education News: Northern Ireland - Board defers 4m cuts toSEN budgets

The Belfast Education and Library Board has deferred plans to slash spending on special educational needs.

Board members have refused to back a package of cuts which would savealmost 4m with the largest single amount coming out of thespecial educational needs budget. Money would also be saved byincreasing the price of school meals.

Northern Ireland's children's commissioner has been closely monitoringthe situation in Belfast. A spokesperson for Nigel Williams said: "Weare very aware of how cuts to special educational needs services canpotentially have a profound effect on individual children and theirfamilies. In our role as watchdog for young people's rights, we willcontinue to monitor how all services are affected by the current debateon education funding."

A spokesperson for Belfast Education and Library Board said: "The boardis gravely concerned at the continued under-funding, which restricts itscapacity to provide for education, youth and library services."
