Education News: Music Pledge hailed as a huge step forward

4Children has hailed the Government's new manifesto for music education as a "huge step" towards making music accessible to all children.

The children's charity, which runs the Come and Play music-making project in out-of-school clubs, said the aims of the manifesto could be "pushed even further" by encouraging music professionals to work in clubs as well as schools.

Among the manifesto's five key priorities are a commitment to identify and nurture the country's most talented young musicians, and to provide more opportunities for young people to broaden their musical interests and skills.

School standards minister David Milliband said 180m of funding would be ring-fenced for music education through the Music Standards Fund up to 2008.

4Children has signed up to the manifesto, as has Youth Music.
