Education News: Extended schools - Teachers warn of damage tofamilies

Teachers have warned that extended schools could damage family life in a motion put forward at the annual conference of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

Cecily Hanlon, partnership advisory teacher in the childcare and earlydevelopment service for Leeds City Council, said: "I am very concernedabout the number of hours that young children spend away from thefamily. We are asking whether the extended schools agenda willexacerbate this as it is another situation where children are away fromtheir families."

Hanlon said money spent on extended schools would be better used"promoting family friendly jobs rather than making familiesjob-friendly".
