Education News: Extended schools - Rural schools need extratransport

Extended schools programmes in rural areas where pupils rely on school bus services are set to fail unless provision is made for extra transport, according to a leading councillor in East Devon.

East Devon District Council's Liberal Democrat group leader councillorTrevor Cope, who is also a teacher in the county, says that because mostschool bus services do not run when extended school activities areplanned many pupils will not be able to attend.

He says that at his school, Sidmouth College, where he is also transportco-ordinator, this could affect as many as eight out of 10 children whorely on the bus service, adding: "This just seems to be very poorlythought through."

A spokeswoman for extended schools charity ContinYou said that a focusgroup has been set up to look at transport issues and the Education andInspections Bill is set to extend councils' duty to provide freetransport for disadvantaged families.
