Education News: Extended schools - Kelly set to outline the wayahead

Education secretary Ruth Kelly will outline the next steps for the extended schools agenda at a high-level meeting to be held later this year.

She is expected to urge local authority chief executives to attend theone-day event on 30 November. But as Children Now went to press it wasunclear whether directors of children's services would also be invitedto attend.

One senior education source with close links to the Department forEducation and Skills said the initial plan was only to invite chiefexecutives and that some directors of children's services were "lessthan happy" at being left out of the loop.

But John Harris, director of children's services at Hertfordshire, saidit made sense to involve the top council officials. "I have no issuewith Ruth Kelly targeting chief executives," he said.

The event will be held in conjunction with the National RemodellingTeam, which is working with local authorities to support them indeveloping their plans to deliver extended services in and aroundschools.
