Education News: Drugs - Random testing approved by board

Governors at a Kent secondary school have approved plans to introduce random drugs testing of pupils and teachers (News, 7-13 April).

Peter Walker, head of The Abbey School in Faversham, said the names of 20 pupils would be chosen at random each week. But the young people would then only be tested if both they and their parents consented.

He said: "This is the best form of prevention available at the moment. Surveys show roughly 50 per cent of 15-year-olds have taken some form of drugs. We want to help reduce this figure."

Most parents are supporting the scheme. There is no indication yet of how many teachers will agree to be tested.
