Drug Testing: School scheme to screen treachers

Teachers, as well as pupils, will be included in random drugs tests due to start in September at a Kent secondary school (News, 10-16 March).

Peter Walker, head teacher of The Abbey School in Faversham, hoped most teachers would volunteer to be tested. No child will be tested without consent from their parents. He said: "I am looking at the strongest measures available."

Qualified nurses, who are likely to use swab tests before confirming a positive result with a urine sample, will probably carry out the drugs tests. Blood tests will not be used.
