DRUGS SCREENING: Kent to pilot drugs testing in schools

Kent County Council plans to pilot random drugs testing at one of its schools.

Its announcement comes two weeks after the Prime Minister said schools should have the power to test pupils for drugs (News, 25 February-2 March).

The council confirmed that lawyers would have to look carefully at the proposals, as some believed that testing children without their consent could break the law.

"As long as it is within legal bounds and has the approval of parents and governors, we will support it," said a council spokesman.

The council plans to pilot the scheme at The Abbey School in Faversham, with funding from the News of the World.
