Education News: Child Protection - Watchdog warning on city academies

Children attending the Government's new city academies could be "less protected" than children in state schools, the General Teaching Council has warned.

The teaching watchdog has expressed concern that teachers at the academies will not have to register with it.

Chief executive Carol Adams said: "I do not believe that the parents of children attending academies would wish their children to be less protected than those in neighbouring schools."

But the Department for Education and Skills played down concerns. "Teachers in independent schools are not required to be registered with the council," said a spokesman. "However, most teachers in academies will be registered, as they'll have come from maintained schools.

"This is really only an issue for completely new teachers who start out in academies, and this will apply to a very small number of them."
