Education: Birmingham - Academies plan gets green light

Seven schools in Birmingham are to become city academies, the city council said last week.

Council leader Mike Whitby (Conservative) said the academies - privatelyrun but predominantly state-funded schools - would play an integral rolein a 750m Building Schools for the Future programme.

Education charities Ark and Edutrust will each sponsor two academies,with a consortium led by property developer Richardsons Capitalsponsoring a fifth.

Sponsors for the final two academies will be announced in September.
