
Birmingham Council’s cabinet was asked to confirm the transfer of eight school buildings to new academies in the city. But the decision has been delayed because the transfer would require the council to write off more than a £1m worth of debts across the eight schools.
Council leader Sir Albert Bore said: “If we approve these academies we get a £1.3m headache, which will grow as more schools with deficits convert to academies.”
A council spokesman told CYP Now: “The report to the council has been deferred and it will come back to cabinet when the concerns have been addressed.”
Chris Keates, general secretary of NASUWT, said the council was right to refuse to write of the debts.
