Education News: Bullying - More open attitude needed say MPs

1 min read
Schools need to become more open about bullying if the problem is to be effectively tackled, an influential committee of MPs has warned.

In an in-depth report on bullying by the Education and Skills SelectCommittee, the MPs warn that a lack of reliable data is hindering workto stop bullies.

The report states: "A lack of accurate data on bullying is one barrierto more effective anti-bullying work. We recommend a requirement forschools to record all incidents of bullying."

Julia Collar, the national co-ordinator of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, agreed that a lack of data was a problem, but warned that thecommittee's proposal could backfire.

"There's a huge risk in schools being open about the level of bullyingbecause of school league tables. Schools are under pressure to maintaina good public image and this could result in under-reporting ofbullying," she said. "Such data won't make it clear whether a school isbad or simply has a culture of telling."
