Education News: Bullying - MPs prepare to launch national inquiry

Parliament's Education and Skills Select Committee last week announced plans to hold an inquiry into bullying in English schools.

The inquiry will investigate the "extent and nature of the problem ofbullying in schools, its effects on those involved and how it can bestbe tackled".

Among the issues covered by the inquiry will be:

- how to define bullying
- the extent of homophobic and racist bullying
- why people become bullies and why people are bullied
- the effect of bullying on academic achievement, physical and mental
health, and social and emotional wellbeing.

The inquiry, which will be headed by committee chairman Labour MP BarrySheerman, will also examine to what extent schools can be responsiblefor bullying that takes place off their premises and how they can dealwith it. The effectiveness of the Department for Education and Skills'guidance for schools on bullying will also be examined by the MPs on thecommittee.
