Education: Lambeth breaks language barrier

Education
Lambeth council has improved the educational standards of Portuguese speaking children by working with the local community to get information about education across.

The Portuguese speaking community in Lambeth, which is the largest outside Portuguese speaking nations and includes 1,798 pupils, has traditionally been among the lowest achieving groups in the borough.

One reason for this was parents did not register their children for schools in time, leaving them without a place at the start of the school year. To tackle this, council staff, accompanied by interpreters, attended meetings at local Catholic churches after Mass where they were able to explain the enrolment process.
