Education News: Language - Lambeth boosts bilingual pupils

Lambeth Council has raised the achievement of many of its ethnic minority pupils after adopting a new approach to teaching English as a second language.

The London borough now wants the Government to develop its scheme, whichincludes a scale for identifying the needs of bilingual learners andmonitoring their performance.

In its report on the scheme, English Language Acquisition and EducationAttainment in Schools, the council states: "Bilingual pupils assessed asfully fluent in English perform much higher than the national average atall ages. They show that once the disadvantage of language is overcome,it is possible to attain at high levels."
