The plan, unveiled by Prime Minister Tony Blair at the Labour Party's spring conference in Manchester last week, will see every secondary school in England rebuilt or replaced in the next 10 to 15 years.
Schools minister David Miliband told YPN the 2bn-a-year programme would make extended schools the norm.
"The idea of the Building Schools for the Future programme is to realise the best possible vision of education. Every secondary school will become an extended school, providing formal education along with health provisions and a range of other services," said Miliband.
Under plans in the Every Child Matters green paper, extended schools would act as community centres offering services, including youth work and Connexions, on site.
