Education: Bullying record plan rejected

The Department for Education and Skills this week rejected a recommendation that it should force schools to record incidents of bullying.

Responding to the Education and Skills Select Committee's report onbullying, it said while recording bullying was good practice, a legalrequirement would be logistically difficult.

The committee found examples of victims being excluded from school onhealth and safety grounds, and recommended the DfES issue guidance onwhen exclusions should be used "as a matter of urgency".

Julia Collar, national co-ordinator for the Anti-Bullying Alliance, saidthe Government needs to follow the lead of some of councils that collectdata. "We understand that it will take time and it will be hard to do itbecause there are issues around definition and consistency," she said.
