Education: Behaviour - Canteen a success after pupil input

Pupil involvement in designing a school canteen has improved behaviour and reduced vandalism.

Students, led by school council members, helped to redesign the canteenat Queen Elizabeth's Mercian School in Tamworth, with a budget of 10,000.

School council member Matthew Hutchinson said there were now fewerfights and less vandalism. "Behaviour is good and there is no graffitibecause students feel a sense of ownership," he said.

The school council provides students at the school, which caters formore than 1,200 pupils, with an opportunity to participate indecision-making.

Jessica Lobo, a school council member in Year 10, said it was importantto involve pupils: "If you communicate then you get more feedback."

Physically-impaired children in Bristol are to have the chance to attendschool alongside their able-bodied peers.
