From Greater Manchester Police's Chief Superintendent David Baines warning of "feral youths" to Home Officer minister Hazel Blears mooting the idea of young offenders wearing a uniform while carrying out community service, a variety of solutions were proffered to solve the "problem" of a largely disrespectful younger generation.
Even the Queen's Speech emphasised a range of measures to curb crime and disorder on the streets such as the Violent Crime Reduction Bill, which will give head teachers a legal right to search pupils for weapons.
However, two other government announcements gave an indication that there may actually be some detailed thinking taking place in Whitehall about how to improve the quality of life for children and their local communities.
