Editorial: The police must stop targeting the young

PC David Yates is alleged to have told the 16-year-old he would "smash his Arab face in" and threatened to write the incident up "properly" - the implication being that a guilty verdict was a formality. The teenager had the presence of mind to start the record facility on his mobile phone as he was arrested - no doubt fearing what was coming based on previous experience. But how common is this approach elsewhere?

Our Hot Issue this week (see p14) suggests many people are concerned that police target young people without good reason. Chris Eades, an information officer at the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, says the Kurdish community believes the Yates case was far from an isolated incident.
