A Freedom of Information request to the Home Office by Young People Now shed interesting light on dispersal zones and their use throughout the country, seemingly targeted at young people. Five police forces were unable - or unwilling - to supply data, including the Metropolitan Police, so the figures aren't definitive. But they show police took at least 500 young people under 16 home in the first 18 months of the scheme (see p2).
More than 14,000 people were also moved on under new powers afforded by the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003. The Home Office was unable to detail the ages of these individuals, but most youth groups spoken to by Young People Now consider it reasonable to assume the majority were young people.
