Editorial: Connexions adds value by multi-tasking

Sayers' day alternates between centre-based work at a Connexions outlet in Derby city centre, school visits and meetings with other agencies working with young people in the area. His enthusiasm is such that he also runs a local youth centre on a voluntary basis in the evening.

The original plan was for Connexions to employ 15,000 personal advisers throughout the 47 partnerships in England, with 9,000 support staff. In reality, and according to a National Audit Office report earlier this year, there are only 7,000 qualified personal advisers and 2,400 frontline support staff. This has led to workloads being much higher than they would want, which in turn leads to advisers prioritising their work for themselves.
