Eating disorders: Body image project has plans to expand

1 min read
A programme to improve young women's body image is seeking funding to roll out across England and Wales, after a pilot project showed it improved self-esteem.

Does My Bum Look Big in This, an intervention programme run by YWCA Cumbria Young Women's Project and youth development charity Brathay Hall Trust, involved six 11- to 16-year-olds on a 10-day programme (YPN, 22-28 June, p2).

They developed self-image boosting techniques, including neurolinguistic programming, before acting as peer mentors in their own communities.

Evidence from the Rosenberg Self Esteem Inventory, a system of measuring self-esteem, showed that the young women almost doubled their self-esteem during the programme.

Brathay Hall Trust is now seeking a grant from the Department for Education and Skills to extend the programme to six YWCA projects across Cumbria next year, eight across the Northwest the following year and 10 across England and Wales the year after.
