Goals: To help young people in Barrow-in-Furness improve their communication skills
Funding: 10,000 from the Barrow Excellence Cluster Partnership and the Francis Scott Charitable Trust
Young people in Cumbria have been learning self-help skills to make them aware of their own behaviour and the way they communicate with others.
Run by the Brathay Hall Trust, the Transactional Analysis Proficiency Award for Children and Young People (Tapacy) programme has just completed its first 10-week run in two schools in Barrow-in-Furness, working with a Year 9 and a Year 11 group.
Karen Stuart, assistant head of consulting for children and young people's services at Brathay, says explosive outbursts in the classroom can often be the result of a lack of communication skills in young people: "There are difficulties over behaviour because young people do not know how to communicate with teachers and vice versa. So by encouraging communication skills between the two, you can free up teaching time."
