The Building on the Early Years project, launched by the Social Market Foundation think tank and supported by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Sutton Trust, will concentrate on initiatives for five- to 16-year-olds.
Researchers will look at school-based, extended school, out-of-school and home-based programmes, including parenting projects, and try to identify "best value for money" approaches shown to have a lasting impact on young people's life chances.
SMF research fellow Vidhya Alakeson hoped the project would influence the development of children's centres and extended schools.
"Particularly with extended schools there is a lack of a sense of what will really happen within that setting," she said.
